Twelve Grapes
By Donnell Asare , 2026
The Twelve Grapes is a traditional Spanish custom in which one grape is eaten with each of the twelve strokes of midnight on 31 December, a practice believed to bring luck and prosperity for the coming year. In Donnell Asare’s photo series of the same name, this tradition becomes a space for contemporary reflection in this series. Grapes appear as an ordered composition, and the absence of the twelve creates a pause that invites attention. The work explores grief, renewal, loss and hope, offering a meditation that extends beyond the frame.
